What is DMK?
Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam is an Indian political party that is active in Tamil Nadu and the union territory of Puducherry. It is currently the opposition party in Tamil Nadu and a member of the Indian political front, the United Progressive Alliance. CN Annurai created the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), a Tamil Nadu-based political party, in 1949. Annadurai led the party for 20 years before becoming Chief Minister (Chief Minister) of Tamil Nadu in 1967.
Following Annadurai’s death in 1969, a feud between MG Ramachandran (MGR) and Karunanidhi erupted. MGR had accused Karunanidhi of corruption while he was the party’s president. MGR was dismissed from the DGK by Karunanidhi in 1972. MGR founded the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam to fight the DMK.
The AIADMK deposed the DMK in 1977 and prevented it from regaining power in 1989. In 1991, Rajiv Gandhi compelled the state government to dissolve because of its pro-Tamil Eelam position amid escalating communal violence in Sri Lanka. In June 1991, the AIADMK won the assembly elections. Terrorists from the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) killed Gandhi. In the subsequent Lok Sabha elections, Karunanidhi’s party did not win a single seat.
